Time for an overhaul.

And no, I’m not talking about the overhaul we just made on our democracy (though THAT sure was a wild one!), I’m talking about the overhaul on my website.

That old headshot was cute but even complete strangers could tell it was at least ten years old. (Fifteen, to be exact.) And when was the last time I updated my portfolio? My services? My testimonials? Got me out here looking like a half-rate freelancer and WE WILL NOT STAND FOR IT ANY LONGER.

So I emerged from the dust and decay of democracy and our second floor home renovation to say, “Look, world, this is me! FEAR ME” because, really, what are we doing here if we’re not picking ourselves back up and heading shoulders back, face forward into this brave new world?

Yes, an overhaul was certainly needed. Please indulge me as I share some changes and updates.

Overhaul # 1: New Headshots

Look, we can’t be out here looking all raggedy while we’re fighting the man. I wanted to look cute in addition to looking formidable, which is why I knew my first call would be to Emily April Allen, photographer of all the best, strongest, cutest, and most formidable people in Nashville just ready to jack your shit if you disrespect the dolls (and others).

As someone who immediately freezes under the camera like it’s going to steal my soul, I was so wowed by the magic Emily was able to conjure. Behold:

Like, are you for real??

Hire Emily for all your photography needs. Just do it.

Overhaul # 2: New Website

Or, not exactly a whole new website, but new content and new organization.

Pages of interest:

1) Portfolio and Publications, with an updated list of everything I’ve ever written, plus highlights, plus brands and bylines, and my god, that list just goes and goes and goes.

2) Writers Ask, the old pseudo-advice column resurrected from the years of newsletters and placed in one easy to read spot. Enjoy!

3) Testimonials, so I can remind myself along with newbies to the site that I do add some value to some people around here.

Plus updates to the Rates, FAQs, Resources For Writers, and Newsletter pages.

Overhaul # 3: Updated Services

I have added and expanded some editorial services. Here’s a refresher of them all:

1) Manuscript Critique — A “is this thing actually working” gut check on your manuscript. Comes with a brief feedback letter and comments on the manuscript. Great for manuscripts that have gone through a few drafts and yet you still can’t quite put your finger on what’s unfinished about it.

2) Developmental Editing — A down-and-dirty editorial assessment of your messy draft. Comes with an in-depth editorial letter, comments on the manuscript, and a one hour phone call to discuss. Great for early drafts looking for direction.

3) Line Editing — I take a fine-toothed comb to each of your sentences and edit for clarity, form, style, and flow. *Not to be confused with copy-editing. Great for those who need help putting the panache in their drafts.

4) Copy Editing — This is the grammar police portion of editing. I edit for grammar, typos, and continuity. *Not to be confused with proofreading. Great for those with an ear for words but no eye for grammar.

5) Proofreading — This is the last-ditch, catch-all-mistakes-or-forever-hold-your-peace portion of editing. This is the final check of your manuscript in its final formatted form before it is sent off to the printer. Great for independent publishers or anyone preparing documents for public consumption.

6) Story Coaching — You ever just need to talk through your manuscript with someone? Bounce off some ideas? Verbally vomit the plot until you figure out what the hell you’re missing? I’m here for you.

7) All In Editing — You can choose these services a la carte as needed, or you can go all in! All In Editing is where we work long-term from beginning to publish on all facets of the editorial process. This will involve a mix of coaching and editing to get your manuscript to the finish line.

8) Picture Book Consultations - I have been doing story time for unruly crowds of babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and school-age kids for over 15 years now. So when I say I have specific expertise on picture books, I good goddamn well mean it. In a picture book consultation, we’ll talk story, form, style, illustrator notes, and developmental appropriateness.

9) Picture Book Start To Finish — You can also go all in on picture book publishing with me to help you take your book from concept to manuscript to print. Perfect for independent publishers looking to get the best book possible out on the market.

10) Ask Me Anything Writing Consultations — Schedule some all-you-can-ask time to discuss anything publishing, freelancing, pitching, writing, or kidlit-related. I’m an open book.

Wheeeeeewwww that’s a lot of options. What can I say? That new bathtub ain’t gonna pay for itself.

What’s Not Changing

1) I will always be a salty bitch.

2) This newsletter will keep coming.

3) As a librarian, I will always protect the freedom to read. As a writer, I will always tell the truth. As a human, I will always believe steadfast in the goodness of others.

We’re in this together, y’all. Just us in one big ol’ bathtub of boiling angst and hope. Let’s be good to each other.

And next time—let’s gossip.

So long, farewell!
